Two PB's and two recovery sessions!

Its done! we finished our first fun with personal best times! Darren ran it in 2:10:25 and my time was 2:25:14. We woke up at 4.50am, showers, coffees and a banana for me, and we head downstairs for a 5.30 departure on the bus. There is a little chit chat on the bus, and we joke about why we are doing this, for the chocolate. The bus takes around 20 minutes to arrive at the Cadbury factory and our start line. It's not too cold outside, but we wait indoors anyway. We head outside at 6:25 to the start line.

Darren was not in a good state of mind this run. His thoughts were how hard it was, and he even had to walk a couple of times up the hill in the last kilometre (IT WAS a BIG hill!!!). He played cat and mouse with one other runner, he would pass him, then Darren would pass him etc etc. I seen Darren at the 11-12km mark and we high 5'd! He seemed to be going along ok.

The run for me was good. I chose songs I liked to listen to as opposed to songs with good beat. My best split was 5:51, and at that time. I was listening to every road leads home to you by Richie Sambora and was thinking of my little sister. I also downloaded the grease songs, and they had my running along pretty well also.

This was around the 4-5km mark

We had head wind and hills to deal with, and the climb at the end was HUGE!! I kept saying I wasn't going to walk, because that is my goal in my runs. I ended up giving in and walked about 50 metres, but didn't beat myself up about it, as I said it was a BIG climb after running 20km!

I pass through the finish line, and I don't see Darren, until I sit down to remove my timing tag. I'm chatting with the lady next to me when Darren comes along and removes it for me; the lady next to me thought he was 'some random', t'was funny.

We eat chocolate, drink, eat more chocolate and recover before heading into the factory shop, $80 odd later and we have added 8kg's to our luggage! Lucky we only do this once a year!

We head to our bus, and are lucky to get the last seat, and head back to our hotel. We relax for a bit before heading out to the Hobart aquatic centre. Here, we spend 2 hours recovering in the pool and spa, alternating between warmth and cold. We feel pretty good.

We head back to the hotel, where we do a quick turnaround before heading out to our 2 hour Thai massage. We have never had a Thai massage before! and laugh quietly and not knowing what to do when they lead us into a room with mats on the floor and they are arranged with decorative items. We didn't know what to move and what towel to put over us, before we know it, the masseuses come back into the room, sort is out, and before I know it, I am listening to Darren snoring gently.

Last night dessert; nested meringue

The 2 hours pass relatively quickly and we head back to our room. In the foyer we meet up with one of the couples we met at the Pre run dinner. We swap stories about our runs, and we find out that they thought it was a tough run. Darren and I feel great about our times. We have a drink to celebrate, dinner and dessert and then head upstairs to sleep. I don't remember much about last night, just hitting the pillow, and then the first light coming through the curtains this morning, and Darren was pretty much the same.

The top of Tassie

This morning we ordered room service for breakfast, packed and left the hotel around 11am. Our flight was leaving at 1pm, so we enjoy chai lattes prior to going through security. An hour and a half later, after catching up with some other runners, I hear Darren and my name being paged!! We run to the gate, and board our plane. It's a quick flight of 1 hour, and we collect our luggage and drive the hour or so home. We decide our recovery should include some after work, and after unloading the car and catching up with the 2 youngest head out to Carrum beach for a couple of hours. We walk/jog 3 Km's and stand in the cool ocean. Aah! It was amazing. So amazing in fact, we are heading there straight after work tomorrow, after all, it is going to be low 40's tomorrow.

Carrum beach tonight

Thanks for reading. We are off to bed shortly, hoping I can walk a little easier tomorrow!

Less than. 24 hours to go!!!!

We slept solidly last night. I didn't wake once! We wake, shower, and head downstairs to breakfast. No rush. We have decided to enjoy a leisurely morning relaxing, collecting our race packs and wandering through the Salamanca market.

After breakfast, we walk 2 blocks to Running edge to collect our race pack! We walk in, collect our race packs and look at the socks. We have dual layer socks, but we start talking to Kim who tells us all about the different socks! and why you would or wouldn't buy them. Very knowledgable! We choose our socks and head to the runner section....Uh-oh!!!!

Our new X socks! Can't wait to try them tomorrow,

Darren has never been properly assessed for gait and foot type, so we head to the runners....oh my!! PINK ones!!! I really don't need another pair, BUT...I try on a pair of ASICS and I fall in love again! I just love the support and the feel of them. I feel like I can run and run and run! Needless to say...

MY NEW RUNNERS

Darren is assessed, and Kim tells darren he is flat footed. He heads out back and comes back with several pairs for Darren to try on. Darren puts them on and says he can feel the support and difference already. He decides to leave them on and wear them in today.

DARRENS NEW RUNNERS

We pay for our new socks and runners, $550 later, we head off; happy. Darren just wants to run now. Maybe not the best idea, I tell him to save the running for tomorrow.

We take our purchases back to the hotel, but a bag I spotted in store is nagging me, and we pass the Running edge again, buy the bag and drink belts! and get out of there before we do anymore damage.

MY NEW RUNNING BAG

OUR RUNNING BELTS

The running edge is located in Hobart but they have an online store, and free postage anywhere in Australia. Definitely worth a vist if you are ever visiting the area, or looking in line!

We head to Salamanca market, and pass a display of cars from the past. We have a good look at them, and appreciate their age and condition.

Oldies but goodies!

The market was quite war, especially out in the open. It was a beautiful sunny day, after an hour or so we decide to find food. We find a row of cafés, peruse the menus, find one that suits us, and sit down, enjoying the day.

SALAMANCA MARKET

After lunch we take a stroll to the harbour and decide to take the double decker bus ride around Hobart.

FOUNTAIN OUTSIDE THE CAFE WHERE WE ATE LUNCH

The bus takes us on a one and a half hour tour of Hobart an we drink in the sights! both old and new. It was amazing!

After a relaxing day out, we head back to our hotel. We pass a Thai massage business! and decide to head in for a 'look'. 5 minutes later, we head out....see photo below.

We arrive back at our room, unpack our runners and socks and belts like little kids on Christmas morning. We relax for an hour. Effort showering and heading down for the Cadbury Pasta dinner. Pasta, pasta and more pasta. The food is great, and we share our running stories with others at the table. A majority of people in the room are from interstate, and the race director tells us we are part of a record field!

Back to our room a couple of hours later, our race gear is ready, everything is ready to go for our first half marathon for 2014. Darren's happy feet have finally stopped tapping and jumping around.

Our alarm is set for 5am. This time tomorrow we will have completed our first one! The excitement is building. Stay tuned for tomorrow's post run entry.

Off to Hobart we go!!

Last night we were lucky enough to go see Grease the musical. It was sensational! It meant no training, or packing for our trip though, along with an arrival time of midnight to bed. It was around 5 when I got out of bed, showered, and packed, ready for my 5.54am train to work! Just made it with 2 minutes to spare. Darren is back at work after a day off doing some serious damage to his teeth as well as his jaw; the dentist bill alone is $10k!!!

Fridays are REALLY busy, but the best thing is after 5 straight hours it's lunch time, and after drinking only a bottle of water all morning (and a VERY large strong latte!!!!)  I sit and relax for half an hour. I call Darren and we organise our plans for pick up this afternoon. He has already finished work!

ASICS called yesterday to say they would send us some apparel and it arrived today!!!
I love my ASICS runners. I wouldn't run in anything else now. I have several different colours, but that's another story,

Our new gear: love the colours, love the material AND pockets in my tops!! Needless to say my running gear for Sunday has changed!!!!

Just before 4pm Darren calls me to say he is out the front of work. I finish up, clear my desk, and before I know it we are on our way to the airport. We park the car and check in, as we are 2 hours early we are upgraded to the exit aisle! YAY! Darren is excited about the extra leg room.

We fly to Hobart. We check in at our hotel, here is where the bus will collect us from on Sunday morning. Rest and relaxation time. We are excited about being in Hobart. Our journey has well and truelly begun!

The first goodies have arrived!

You know that feeling, when a parcel arrives from the post office. You think what have I ordered? What am I expecting. It's a parcel post pack and I feel the contents inside, trying to figure out what it is. I turn it over and see it is from the Wangaratta marathon and Fun Runs!! Our first goodies have arrived!

I open the parcel and find our t-shirts and our tickets to our pre race dinner! Yay! No race bibs though; I love having my bib and timer the night before. Not to worry though, they will be collected in Wangaratta.

So last night a friend, Carly texted me and asked if we were interested in a fun run on Australia Day. It's 10km AND we get a medal. Needless to say, Darren was in and so yet ANOTHER event is added to our fast filling calendar.

Here is the link for anyone interested:

Darren hit is jaw today with a 450mm spanner. A broken tooth, 2 stitches and a very sore jaw is the report on him. Me, well I'm well rested after putting myself to bed before 8pm last night! I really wanted us to get a 3-4km run in tonight, but after Darren's visit to the Dr in the last couple of hours, it's just not realistic. There are lots of amazing sites out there with training plans and nutrition information. First and foremost, I like to listen to my body. Sometimes, rest is the best training. A gentle stretch and a big drink bottle of BCAA is tonight's session. Just 5 more sleeps to go now, excitement is building!

Race bibs, medals and t-shirts

Over the last couple of weeks, when talking to people about our goal, I've been asked what's my favourite memento. We all know darren loves a medal, so here's my take on it all:

I have collected every single bib from every event I did last year.

It is quite fulfilling looking at them, remembering each and everyone within their own right. Some bring back memories of struggle, but for the most part, they bring back memories if strength and achievement.

I don't look at my t-shirts or singlets that we are given from the events very often. I tried to run in a t-shirt and definitely will never do that again, it's singlets all the way,

Last years hard earned inspiration

My medals hang just in the door way to my study. I get a real sense of achievement and motivation when I look at them. Looking forward to adding to my collection as we complete each event this year.

Which brings me to today's tasks. I have spent the day filing all of our flights into a folder with pockets, registration confirmation and the accommodation that has been booked. Accommodation is still a work in progress, it's very time consuming booking and registering so many events, TWICE! Anyway, it's almost complete, just waiting on a few registrations to open and we will be planned and booked. I must say, we have paid anywhere between $35-$90 for each event. A massive price difference for different events. Will be interesting to compare them all.

My poor diary planner looks like this:

We are going to rest as much as we can, while training and looking after our bodies. This afternoon we went to Zen, which is an oriental remedial massage business just 5 minutes from our house. The 2 masseuses know us, and expect us every Sunday. Today my ITB felt the best it has in weeks. Darren feels pretty good as well. This week, in the lead up to our first event in Hobart next Sunday, the Cadbury marathon festival, will see us do a few slow runs, and lots of rest. Good food is on the menu and of course my BCAA drinks! I love the taste, and they make the water go pink; my favourite colour!

"Run for me Sharon"

I walk through the door after work, and darren is sitting there waiting, in his running gear. C'mon c'mon, he's ready to go. I change and we head out. The temperature was perfect and with just a slight breeze, it was a great night for a run. 8km by our training plan. The kilometres tick over, and soon we are back home. Spent.

Checking our times, we realise we have knocked 6 minutes of our 8km run on Monday night! happy days.

Running for me is about that feeling when I finish a run, you can't buy it. I am a research nurse that works with melanoma patients, and it could be very tough if it wasn't for running. It's my release, my therapy, my 'me' time. One patient once said to me as I was ready to run a half marathon that weekend, "run for me Sharon", and I did. It was the 19km mark, and it was raining, it was awful, I'm sure anyone who did the Melb marathon festival can remember how awful those last few kilometres were. But suddenly, those words flashed in my mind, and it pushed through the pain and the conditions and I accepted my first half marathon medal for Melbourne. I never did get to show her.

Until next time, thanks for reading xx
